The Rose Garden is commonly known for UBC students as the quintessential studying and relaxation spot. People come there to meditate and enjoy the view of the mountains and the Museum of Anthropology. It is even a popular date spot. It is associated fully with the idea of tranquility. However, recently there has been a lot of construction surrounding the area with gardening which means loud noises, fences, and orange tape. This, combined with the nightlife and parties in the evenings on weekends produce remnants, which can be found scattered throughout the garden if you look closely. For example, there is vandalism, cigarettes, and alcohol bottles that can be seen and found throughout the garden. The dichotomy of serenity and chaos in the same place was an interesting point to explore for our group.

Our aim is to create a vibrant and diverse portrayal of this place, one that captures its liveliness and energy. The true nature of this place and what it means to different people is an open question. It might be peaceful or bustling, sparsely populated or crowded, wild or carefully tended. With this in mind, we strive to capture as many facets of the garden as we can. We are not just interested in motion and inanimate objects within the garden, such as people strolling, but also elements outside of it, such as passing cars on the street. The world outside is an extension of the world inside, and the inside is infinite if we examine it closely with great care. Birds embody the unbridled spirit that moves freely between the garden and the wider world. Through this project, we hope to remind people to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the garden and the natural world around it.
